Welcome to the inaugural edition of the breadwallet blog. We’ll be covering a variety of different subjects here, from bitcoin and economics to history and tech.

Since this is the first blog post, I’d like to talk a little about why breadwallet is different from other financial tech companies.

When you start to look closely, it rapidly becomes clear that bitcoin is fundamentally different from the world’s existing currencies and payment systems. The leap in capability is profound: as big as the one from telephone networks and postal services to the Internet. The Internet gave us the free flow of communication and information, but it left the way our money works almost completely untouched. Bitcoin can extend this freedom and personal control to our finances.

With bitcoin you can send any amount of money to anyone, anywhere in the world at any time, instantly, and nearly for free. It requires no account setup, no identification, no permission. This kind of financial freedom simply hasn’t existed in the past.

High inflation rates create enormous problems and make it impossible to save money in many places around the world, even though they are not discussed much in the affluent West. Bitcoin has solved this problem too. There is a fixed maximum amount of it, after which it can’t be inflated.

From the villages of West Africa and favelas of South America, to the megacity finance centers of London, New York and Tokyo, bitcoin represents a radically new monetary technology with the potential to change all our lives.

It’s for these reasons that the breadwallet team and I built breadwallet — to bring the true power of bitcoin to you, and everyone else in the world who uses money.

As with any new technology, there are a lot of rough edges that need to be smoothed out to make it useful and practical enough that people want to make it a part of their daily lives. So that’s where we focus. Our goal is to raise the state of the art in the fintech industry in three specific areas: security, privacy, and simplicity. These are critical for anything related to your finances.

Our promise to you then is threefold:

We never release a product that we believe puts your funds at risk from malware or physical theft. Security is a bedrock requirement for any financial app or service, and all the more so when it comes to digital cash. We take this responsibility incredibly seriously. That’s why our products are only available for hardware encrypted devices that use the best industry standard security techniques to defend against malware.

We always design our products to maximize your financial privacy. Your private financial information lives only on your device, where even we don’t have access to it. This gives you the control to decide who you choose to share it with. Privacy is an essential part of all our lives, especially when it comes to our finances. We understand this, and build it into our products from the start.

And finally, you can always expect a delightfully simple experience that puts you in full control. We consider carefully each and every aspect of our product, with an eye toward what can be taken away. By streamlining to focus on what you want to get done, the product becomes more accessible, easier to understand, and a joy to use.

With these principles always at the heart of our product design philosophy, we think we can build something that lives up to the promise and potential that this new financial technology offers.

We’re here to put the power of bitcoin in your hands.
