Why do I get an "Invalid Address" error when sending bitcoin cash?
There are 2 address formats used for Bitcoin Cash:
- The Legacy address which follows the same format as a bitcoin address (these addresses start with 1 or 3); and
- The "Cash Addr" format which is an encoded version of the legacy address that prevents users from sending bitcoin to a bitcoin cash address and vice versa (these addresses start with bitcoincash:q, q or p).
The BRD app uses the "Cash Addr" format to prevent users from sending bitcoin to a bitcoin cash address and vice versa. This protects our users from accidental loss of funds.
If you are sending bitcoin cash to a wallet that uses legacy addresses, you can try one of the following:
- Contact the third party wallet provider and request for the "Cash Addr" equivalent of the legacy address displayed in the receiving wallet; or
- Use a trusted site to convert the legacy address to the "Cash Addr" format.
